Program overview:

Hazardous substances can have serious effect when they come into contact with the human body. Many of these substances will carry (Workplace Exposure Limits) (WELs). Exposure to substances can occur through Ingestion, contact with the skin, and breathing in substance or injection through a puncture in the skin

The purpose of the management and control of substances hazardous to health (COSHH) training program is to equip participants with knowledge on the importance of occupational health and the risks presented by chemical and biological health hazards to which they are exposed and steps they can take improve on their health and safety.

For whom:

This program is designed for employees in all industry sectors, especially people with responsibility for the control of exposure to chemical and biological hazards in the workplace, including line managers, supervisors, safety representatives and anybody who work close to substances hazardous to health at work.

Learning objectives:

At the end of the program, participants will be able to:

  • explain the need and basics of identifying, measuring and controlling exposure to harmful substances in the work environment;
  • interprets and use the MSDS;
  • explain the hazards associated with the use of chemical and biological substances;
  • apply principles of good control practice;
  • explain the routes of entry and defiance mechanisms; and
  • select and use appropriately PPE.

Day 2: Assessments and action plans

  • Hierarchy of control and reliability

Day 3: Reducing exposure by process change

and substitution

  • Choosing and using effective LEV
  • Choosing and using RPE
  • Skin and ingestion exposure
  • Choosing and using PPE
  • Managing COSHH

Training Methodology

Lectures, discussions, exercises, case studies, audio-visual aids will be used to reinforce these teaching/learning methods.
